Can a Judge Remain Independent When AI Runs the Courtroom Workflow?

Abu Dhabi’s judiciary has announced what it calls the world’s first fully integrated AI-powered judicial platform, with a first phase in September 2026 and an eighteen-month rollout. This is an emirate-level initiative, not a UAE-wide one, and much of its design remains undisclosed. AI will analyse files, retrieve law and precedent, and prepare analysis, with judges retaining final decisions. The critical issue is not replacement of judges but whether human oversight is meaningful rather than formal. Transparency, explainability, data protection, bias, due process and independent accountability will determine whether the platform improves justice or quietly erodes it. Governance, not capability, is decisive.
